The Anglo Saxons

Families have been coming to make a new life in Ipswich for over a thousand years. When the Angles and Saxons came from Denmark and Germany nearly 1600 years ago they could not imagine that they would build the foundations of our town and give us the language most of us still speak – English. The port at Gippeswic or Ipswich was an important connection to the continent which has survived to this day.

Our Anglo-Saxon ancestors also left amazing treasures which you can discover in the Anglo-Saxon gallery.
